World’s cheapest standing desk

Standing desks are great to get you up from a sedentary chair, especially when you are at your desk all day. In my case, a standing desk is helpful to alleviate the pain of a back injury that I suffered in my teens.

I would like a sit/stand convertible desk, however those cost hundreds of dollars and I wanted to be a bit thrifty. This desk cost less than $20 to build. The top is reclaimed from an old shelf, and and I counted it as free.

I also wanted to be able to integrate my musical keyboard into the setup. It came out pretty well for $20!

Temp Basement Desk

Dunno why posting photos of your desk is such a trend…. I have been doing it for years now….

While family is over on an extended visit, I have been kicked out of my normal office space. This is my temporary desk, set up in an unfinished basement of the house I am renovating.

The set up:

  • Saw horses to hold the top. Yesterday I was using these to cut boards!
  • A slab of plywood I pulled off the wall that had been a janky shelf.
  • Underneath is my standing desk mat. It is awesome. Currently keeping my feet off the concrete.

This is set up is holding:

  • 2018 MacBook Pro
  • Dell 30” monitor
  • iPad
  • Sennheiser headphones
  • John Maxwell coffee mug
  • Pot of coffee thermos

Finally, a standing desk on the boat!

I have had standing desks for years. In fact, I recently posted a photo I found of the standing desk I had at our Lake City house. When we moved onto the boat I was bummed that there was no area that was both compact and out of the way enough for a standing desk. A couple weeks ago I accidentally ran across the solution!

What I have set up now is a monitor mount with a tray on the arm instead of a monitor. It has been working great! The only major issue I have run across is the monitor height. Because I am using the built in laptop monitor I am looking down, which hurts the upper back after a while. Thinking now about getting a small external monitor to mount similarly above the laptop.
